Fixed braces explained

Fixed braces require the skill and expertise of an orthodontist as they can straighten almost all types of orthodontic cases. Often referred to as train tracks, traditional fixed braces use brackets which are glued to the front of each tooth.

A wire is then attached to apply the necessary tension to pull teeth into the desired position.

Why choose fixed braces?

Fixed braces are the most commonly used orthodontic appliance as they allow the orthodontist more control when adjusting the position of each tooth. This achieves greater results for the patient with a smile that is perfectly aligned.

The whole process can take from eighteen to twenty four months, with appointment schedules nearly every four to six weeks. However, smiling with superlative straight teeth will be well worth the wait!

Fixed braces have undergone numerous developments with a range of variable appliances now available. Metal brackets, which are fixed braces bonded to the teeth, are still the most widely used as they are durable and relatively low cost compared to other more advanced orthodontic systems on the market.

Choice of colours

Different colour elasticated bands can now be attached to the brackets or you can opt for white or clear fixed braces. These are white or translucent brackets using a white band making the braces a little more discreet.

At Kew Road Dental in Richmond we offer a variety of different orthodontic and teeth straightening treatments, from fixed braces and lingual braces to invisible braces (Invisalign).

Before and after Braces

How do fixed braces work?

To enable fixed braces to straighten teeth, light force is exerted onto your teeth by adjusting the tension on the wire or elastic which is connected to each tooth bracket. This gently encourages your teeth to move slowly into their new positions.

Am I suitable for braces?

Our orthodontist recommends visiting our dental practice in Richmond for an initial assessment of your smile. Traditional braces can straighten teeth for almost any teenager or adult who has the following:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Over bite
  • Under bite
  • Cross bite
  • Overcrowded teeth

For aligning teeth which are not so severely crooked or misaligned, there are other options available that may be considered such as Invisalign. These are know as invisible braces and benefit from discreet appearance and shorter treatment times.

This technique has become increasingly popular with adults and people working in the public eye as it does not interfere with their work or socialising.
